Late Night with Jimmy Fallon debuted last night featuring the legendary Roots band. I don't know if they were just there for the inaugural show or will be Fallon's house band for the duration of his contract, but I'm on the fence about their presence on such a show. The Roots...one of the greatest bands in the history of bands...crackin jokes with Jimmy? Is this good or bad?One one hand, being on the show can expose the band to a wider audience but can we really take them seriously now? Should we embrace their heightened status or fear the Roots are slowly 'turning' on hard core Roots fans and buying into commercialism? Is this meaningless comedy/a chance to diversify the image of the group or Hip Hop blasphemy?
As of right now they are his house band. I'm pretty sure they signed a contract to be on full time for good...
ReplyDeleteIts a paycheck! The Roots aren't selling out at all! Why can't people just understand that everyone needs to eat and feed their families. Especially in the economical crisis we are in now.
ReplyDeleteI love the Roots more than anything and have seen them multiple times since 1996.
I think it is a good thing cause it will bring them to a bigger audience and they still keep it on the hip-hop level outside of the show.
I want to know why you can't take them seriously.
They are classics in their own right and will continue to make classic albums.
To not take them seriously would be like me hating on my mom for being a great home cook, then turing it into a worldwide business.
Questlove performs all over the world to this day from DJing to Drumming. The Roots just also performed at Butler not to long as well.
The Roots are currently working on their 9th studio album (11th overall), entitled How I Got Over.
the roots suck.
ReplyDeleteI agree with OhBeOne. I don't think they are selling out and will be taken very seriously. What is the purpose of being a musician if no one hears the sound? In order to be taken "seriously" in hip hop, does an artist need to be starving? Or, can they eat and still be a mouthpiece for all that is real and true in music.
