GateWay2

Well, another 4/20 is upon us, and I can’t think of a better way to spend the day than listening to the latest release from Heavy Gun Recordings: J. Brookinz & Grey Granite present Gateway 2.
The concept for a follow-up to the original Gateway was birthed immediately after last year’s 4/20 release, but Gateway 2 only recently became a reality. “Brookinz wanted to be more a part of the process this year,” Grey Granite explained to me in the final hour of a two-day studio lock-in that took place just a few weeks ago. “Last time he just made the beats, emailed them out, and the artists recorded them in their own studios. This time, we brought mother fuckers here.”

Days before the lock-in was scheduled to begin, Brookinz and Granite were still searching for a space to record in until local rockers The Kemps stepped to the plate to help. Their band’s practice spot, a basement that’s been dubbed ‘Helter Shelter’, was offered up as a contribution to the project. “We put a mic in the cellar, ran some wires out to the computers, and duct taped everything.
