Chrome Pony "Illegal Smiles" (Free Album)
Lately Rock n’ Roll music has been kind of bland (in my eyes at least). You have your old favorites and you have your buzz bands, but Nashville’s Chrome Pony is a breath of fresh air in what lately has been a semi repetitive scene. I highly recommend checking these guys out live!

DMA aka David Moose Adamson has been a fixture of the international indie music scene for much of the past decade with groups like Jookabox and Big Big Car. The past year has found the multi-talented musician changing directions towards a solo career as DMA. With releases on Asthmatic Kitty and Joyful Noise, Moose continues to be a prolific producer, often crafting some of the most original takes on hip-hop in recent memory. Watch for a full length LP from DMA sometime during the summer of 2012.
2011 was a busy year for Indianapolis emcee Oreo Jones. In the past year, OJ has orchestrated an indie rock collab EP, dropped his highly successful single and video "Cordon Bleu", collaborated with Action Jackson on their smash Black Fabio mixtape, and performed at several of the best indie shows in Nap. Spring 2012 is set to be just as busy for Oreo. Over the next few months, watch for music videos for "Black Fabio", "Reggie Miller", and more, big news regarding Let's Do Lunch, a national tour with DMA, and Oreo's long-awaited debut album.

Pep Love: "Hip-Hop, My Friend" (Video) (Prefix Premiere)
Over the years, we have heard our fair share of hip-hop tracks that have personafied the genre as a female that they used to love. Of course, the most famous of those cuts is Common's "I Used to Love H.E.R." off his classic 1994 release, Resurrection. But it's rare that we hear a track that puts hip-hop in the role of an ever-lasting inspiration or friend. Lupe Fiasco embraced that concept on The Cool highlight "Hip-Hop Saved My Life," which was actually based on the story of Houston rapper Slim Thug.
And today, we're hearing a different take on this narrative via Hieroglyphics co-founder Pep Love. The West Coast stalwart has released the visuals for his own hip-hop anthem, the fittingly titled "Hip-Hop, My Friend." The video focuses on the five pillars of the culture, which means you get to see plenty of stylish shots of breaking, DJing, graffiti writing, beatboxing, and, courtesy of Pep Love, MCing.
If you love hip-hop or you have just been wondering what Pep Love's new album, Rigmarole, is going to sound like, you're going to dig this. You can watch the video below. Rigmarole, the Hiero rapper's first solo album in 11 years, drops March 6.

Santi White has offered up another cut from her sophomore album Master Of My Make Believe, entitled ‘Disparate Youth’. There have always been nods to 1980s post-punk in White’s music, but here the influence is explicit. Over an XTC style baseline and squalls of guitar, White wards off “stormy weather” and hunts for a “life worth fighting for”. Strident stuff.
‘Disparate Youth’ will be released as an EP on April 8, bundled with remixes from Switch, Amateur Best and The 2 Bears. The album proper will follow on April 23, and is expected to feature contributions from Dave Sitek and Switch.

GREY GRANITE GETS INTERVIEWED BY NUVO MAGAZINE
Grey Granite: Heavy GunIsolation is a common theme in my conversations with Indianapolis hip-hop movers and shakers. “It's almost like Indianapolis is kind of in their own world, not necessarily as concerned with everything going around it. It's a lot slower pace than what I am used to, when I have worked with people in Chicago and San Diego,” said Stuart. Coleman agreed, commenting, “It seems like people from [Indy] support people that don't live here more than the people that do.
HOMETOWN HIP HOP: BOOM BAP BEATS-THE PROFORMS
pic by Jordan Harrison @nerdswantrobots
"I did all the beats, but the album was produced by The Proforms," he said, continuing, "We discussed everything together. From the order of the tracks, to the order of the rhymes on the songs." But it is Harvey's old school beats that provide the group with its defining characteristic sound. Don't call The Proforms revivalists, though. They view their preference for vintage hip-hop sounds as a genre choice, not a throwback to the '90s. "It's just a genre, it's a musical choice," said Ace. "Some people choose to do swag rap; we do boom bap hip-hop." DJ Spoolz declared that the boom bap style "should never go away," and added that he's "happy to be part of a group that keeps the sound going." To get an outside perspective on the Proforms, I contacted local hip-hop connoisseur Nick Saligoe, better known as DJ Metrognome. Saligoe is best known for his Tuesday night residency at Coaches, Indy's longest running hip-hop night. Nick's impeccable musical taste, expert mixing skills and devotion to the preservation of hip-hop have earned him a place as one of the city's foremost experts on the subject. "I really dig Atavism. I think it showcases some of the best elements that Indianapolis hip-hop has to offer." Saligoe told me. "Joe Harvey is a phenomenal producer," he continued, citing Harvey's use of hard drums and soulful, funky samples. "Any fan that grew up with hip-hop in the '90s and early 2000s should appreciate [Atavism]. I think it's a really strong record and deserves recognition as one of Indy's best releases from 2011," said Saligoe. Despite specializing in a style that is commercially out of favor, The Proforms have set big goals for themselves. "We want to expand outside Indiana, outside the Midwest and outside the country," Skittz said. Ace One admits he would like to see the band tour Europe. "I don't dream that big. But Ace helps with that. He says 'I wanna go to Europe with this project,' and that's not crazy. It's a reasonable goal," said Harvey. But, ultimately, Harvey takes a more restrained view. "I don't have delusions of grandeur. I don't think I'm gonna be a millionaire off this, or a pop star. I had that attitude when I was in my twenties. It's an art, and you have to do it for the sake of the art," said Harvey. Regardless of the album's commercial fate, the group plans to stick together and continue recording. In the words of Ace One, "The Proforms are about saving the world one dope hip-hop song at a time. It's all preservation and perpetuation. This shit won't stop."

Interview with s.a.i.n.t. RECON'S Jesse Reddington
s.a.i.n.t. RECON creates its "prog-hip-hop" sound by carving a snarling threshold for holding the interest of both music-minded rockers and hiphop junkies. The group packs its repertoire with danceable, raw-boned jams that regularly win the crowd's favor. s.a.i.n.t. RECON is something truly unique. s.a.i.n.t. RECON pours every ounce of energy they can muster into everything they do, especially live performances. They step on stage with one objective: putting on a high-energy performance that stretches beyond a traditional hip-hop set. Look out for s.a.i.n.t. RECON as they're sure to tackle the next feat momentarily...Interview 02/09/12 by Troy Padilla
1) HG: So how did you come up with the name s.a.i.n.t. RECON?
Jesse: “s.a.i.n.t.” is an acronym for “speaking as I’ve never told.” AceOne, Mr. Kinetik and myself (I have no fancy name) highly value the importance of evolving as artists. We challenge each other to try new things most other emcees, bass players, or producers wouldn’t try. From how the songs are written and performed to playing the instruments on the recordings, s.a.i.n.t. RECON requires purpose and technique. The end result is ultimately us ‘doing things as we’ve never done them before.’
The word “recon” relates to capturing or reclaiming what was once yours. In this case, I wanted to regain my spirit for writing songs. I’ve played in bands since I was 15. Looking back, I think of all the songs I wrote that never made it to tape. (Not everybody had their own “studio” back then—not that the songs I wrote at 15 were worth a shit, because they weren’t.) It’s kind of depressing though, and definitely drained my will to write over the years. I put RECON together to reclaim that will by producing hip-hop beats featuring the bass guitar, and by finally using my own guidelines for composition, both of which I’ve never done before. There’s a theme in there somewhere.
2) HG: What are you are doing different with hip-hop today in comparison to other hip-hop styles or groups?
Jesse: Traditional hip-hop production relies on the same loop repeating over and over. Every time RECON emcees step to the mic, they’re dealing with a composition containing several different grooves within the same song. You’ll hear bridges, interludes, solos, and whatever else the song demands. Also, hip-hop is heavily based upon samples. We use samples at times, but most of our recordings contain real instruments, especially as time goes on.
3) HG: What other music do you listen to besides hip-hop?
Jesse: If it’s good, I’ll listen to it. As an artist, I think it’s vital to listen to as many different genres as possible. Naturally, I’m drawn to bass greats like Stanley Clarke and Jaco Pastorius. From a songwriter’s perspective, I’ve been greatly inspired by Josh Homme, who’s played in Them Crooked Vultures, Queens of the Stoneage, The Desert Sessions, and Kyuss. I also admire the 500 different groups Mike Patton formed.
4) HG: If you were forced to stop playing bass, what other instrument would you play and why?
Jesse: I think I’d get behind the drum kit. My brother has played since he was about 4, so I’d have a good teacher. Drums are like the engine of music in general. That’s where a lot of the “feel” comes from.
5) HG: Can you provide some details on the Emcees in your group? Their names, past, or maybe some background on how you hooked up.
Jesse: Mr. Kinetik does a lot of solo work, but also recently released separate EPs with Eratic and Rusty Redenbacher. AceOne has his slick mitts in about 30 different Indianapolis projects. I met both guys through Rusty. Ace recorded some vocals on Russ’ Lazarus project while I played bass in the live band. Russ introduced me to Kinetik when Obama came to Indianapolis during the ’08 primaries. We shot the video for “Get Down and Dig It” earlier that day.
6) HG: What is in store for s.a.i.n.t. RECON in 2012?
Jesse: Item 1 on the list: Releasing our debut full-length album titled, “Séance Grenade.” I’d also like to see us play more festivals, shoot a couple videos, continue writing new material, strategize, hustle, etc.
7) HG: Who is your favorite Indianapolis artist or group?
Jesse: The Tornado Alley
8) HG: How do you prepare for your next song or beat?
Jesse: It’s really nothing significant. I develop something on the bass and then bring in a metronome. I start hearing where everything else will fall into place in regard to dynamic and phrasing. Once I come up with the main idea, I just let the song take over and write itself.
9) HG: If you were going to get arrested for anything, what would it be?
Jesse: Playing an Eastern snakecharmer flute in a hip-hop track called “How the Champagne Girl Got Boosted.”
10) HG: Name 3 albums you are listening to in your car right now.
Jesse: I’ve had Mr. Bungle’s “California” cd playing for a week or so. Before that, it was Mudvayne. Before that, WuTang.

Interview with Defame from #Naptown Hip Hop

Heavy Gun Interview with Defame from #Naptown Hip Hop featuring new song Sumerian Nights.
http://soundcloud.com/defame/sumerian-nights
1) HG: How did you get the name Defame?
Defame: The name "defame" kinda came out of nowhere. I probably liked it because it contained 'def' and was similar to 'deftones'. I probably just should have went with 'GORILLAPHANT', though.
2) HG: Name three things you would change about hip hop right now?
Defame: Hmmmmm. I don't know If I'd change anything in particular. I guess I would just like to see people's perception as a whole of what 'hip-hop' is evolve.
3) HG: If you stopped listening to hiphop today what would you be playing in the car?
Defame: Thats hard to imagine. Probably stuff that's loud and noisy and weird.
4) HG: What mainstream hiphop artist do you like the most?
Defame: Is Ghostface mainstream? I'm gonna say Ghost. P. Tone.
5) HG: Who is your favorite hip hop artist you've worked with? And why?
Defame: I'm gonna have to say my friend Lorax. He's unreal with the flow and isn't scared of any beat I throw his way!
6) HG: How do you prepare for your next song/beat?
Defame: Nirvana - Nevermind
7) HG: How do you prepare for your next song/beat?
Defame: Lately it's been lip syncing the Yamasuki singers and watching Ancient Aliens.
8) HG: What are you looking forward to in 2012?
Defame: In 2012 I am looking forward to releasing a few projects. 'Circuit Bent Beats' which is a collaborative EP with Nathan Monk. All of the beats are based around loops and sounds I made from an original set of sounds recorded by Nate. Circuit bent kids toys, turntables, etc. it's a fun listen. Also, I will be releasing an instrumental album called 'Astroglyphics'. It's about space, time, human origins, celestial ancestors etc. Plus more with Lorax for Cicada Shells as well as forming a band thats been talked about between my friends and I.
9). HG: Quick, name 3 songs that you have on repeat right now!!
Defame: Are You...Can You...Were You? (Felt) by Shabazz Palaces, Horizons by Puscifer and Ghost Life by Echomaker.
