First and foremost.Welcome to the new site.I'm going to miss Myspace buuuutttt we gotta move on.It served its purpose. My first blog is going to touch on Freestyling.Me and Grey had an argument about if spitting a written nowadays was wack.I said no.He,on the other hand did not agree. Now let me get this straight. I come from the generation that made it LAW that you come off the dome when you freestyle or you were "wack".Nowadays emcees have taken the liberty of having premeditated rhymes when freestyling. While frowned upon by purists it has become a more effective way of freestyling amongst the masses.Whether it be on TV,on YouTube, radio interviews, and even in ciphers, emcees use writtens to be more effective. In today's world of Hip-hop you only have one chance to make an impression. And the only impression that matters in peoples ever-changing minds today is the last one you left.Freestyling is not easy!It takes A LOT of skill to do .So when listeners hear someone freestyling(off the top or written) and they're bad, it's frowned upon,HEAVILY.But, should an emcee be scorned because they feel, by coming off the dome, they'll be considered a "better" EMCEE in the all-critical eye of the "Hip-Hop Gods",hardly. Some of my favorite emcees can't freestyle a lick.I still like them. But someone who is not familiar with their work my right them off as being "wack".I don't think that's right(or fair) but that's the world we live in today.Don't get me wrong if you can kill a freestyle do it.I'll give you EXTRA kudos.I just beg you to be good.In closing I think that both methods are useful, just as long as they are potent. It's like the vinyl vs serato argument.Don't be so quick to curse the other side just because you don't like the methods.Until they make a program that freestyles for you or dj's for you,Good is good.Wack is wic wic WACK!
here's some cool freestyles and writtens.
Mysonne Vs. E.Ness (written?)
Juice Vs. SuperNatural
THE BEST FREESTYLE BATTLE OF ALL TIME (FREESTYLE)
this isn't the whole version...go find it..it will not disappoint!
i have this battle memorized
J, while I understand your point, can you make a case for why it is being called "freestyling" when it, in fact, isn't spontaneous at all... which is exactly what the word "freestyle" denotes. I think the issue that purists have is the sense of falsehood that applies to the language.
ReplyDeleteFuck that shit! aint nothing exciting about a written freestyle. aint no point! the point is to make it up and make it relevant on the spot!
ReplyDeleteto ME freestyling meant coming off the TOP...it means something else today...we can fight it...or roll with it. To one person freestyling might be not writing on paper or reciting rhymes from memory or maybe it's a mixture of pre-meditaed rhymes and spontaneous thoughts...if you watch E.Ness in the battle with Mysonne not all of that was pre meditated some of the "multi's" seemed to be on the spot...all I'm saying is Hip-hop has more un-written rules and regulations than Christianity and I think playing the "right(hip-hop)/wrong(not hip-hop)" card with the "culture" is a bad idea.
